Deck & Exterior Stair Building in Lehi, UT

A deck is only as solid as the footings under it. We pour those footings and build the deck itself, so nothing gets lost between two crews.

Deck and stairs remodel by Firm Foundation of Utah in Lehi, UT

If your deck is sagging, the stairs are pulling away from the house, or you have a concrete pad in the backyard with nothing on it yet, you need someone who handles both the concrete and the framing. Most homeowners end up hiring two contractors for one project and hoping they agree with each other. Firm Foundation of Utah does both under one license. Call (801) 414-1234 and we'll walk the yard with you and talk through what it would take.

What We Build

Elevated decks. We set footings to depth, frame the deck, lay the decking and tie the whole thing into the house so it stays put through freeze-thaw winters and spring soil movement.

Exterior stairs with metal railings. Straight runs, switchback stairs and basement or side-door access stairs, framed and finished with metal railing that is anchored into the structure, not just bolted to a rim board.

Covered patios and decks over concrete pads. If you already have a concrete pad, we can frame a covered deck or patio on top of it, or pour a new pad sized for the structure you want.

Footings and concrete pads under decks. This is where most deck problems start, so we pour footings and pads that carry the load and hold their level after the ground moves.

Why Choose Us for Decks and Stairs

Firm Foundation of Utah is a licensed Utah contractor (License #11824306-5501) and a family-owned, husband-and-wife team, with more than 25 years of hands-on construction experience between the field and the office. Because concrete and framing are both our own work, one crew pours the footings and frames the deck, and the stairs line up with the landing the first time.

Semisi runs the field work and Sherri keeps the schedule and the paperwork straight, so you talk to the same two people from the first walkthrough to the final one. We take residential and commercial deck and stair work in Lehi and around Utah County.

Our Process

We start by walking the yard with you, checking the existing structure, the slope of the ground and where the stairs need to land. Then we set footings and pour concrete pads, and we let them cure before the framing goes on top. Frames, decking, stairs and railing go in next, and we finish with a walkthrough so you can check the rail height, the stair landing and the finished surface yourself.

Deck & Stair Building FAQs

Do you pour the footings and build the deck yourselves?

Yes. The concrete footings and pads and the deck framing are both our own work, which is the main reason customers call us instead of hiring a concrete contractor and a carpenter separately. One crew, one license, one point of contact.

Can you replace the stairs and railing on an existing deck?

Yes. We replace worn stair runs, rebuild landings that have settled and install new metal railing anchored into the framing. If the footings under the stairs are failing, we replace those too, since that is usually what caused the problem in the first place.

How long does a deck or stair project take?

It depends on the size of the deck and how much concrete work is involved. The one part we won't rush is the concrete: footings and pads need time to cure before anything is framed on top of them. Once the concrete is ready, framing, stairs and railing move quickly.

Can you build a deck over a concrete pad I already have?

Often, yes. We check the pad's thickness, condition and the soil under it, and if it can carry the structure we frame from there. If it can't, we'll tell you straight and pour a pad that can.
